Policies and Procedures for The Career Office

Criteria Necessary for an Intern

To ensure that a STUDENT — whether it is an internal internship or one conducted outside the school premises — must be educational and thus acceptable by the Career office, all the following criteria is a necessity for all interns:

  • The experience gained must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
  • The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
  • The experience acquired must entails a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications
  • There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
  • There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
  • There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.

Paid vs. Unpaid

Internships for credit must run through the academic semester in coordination with the intern’s class schedule. The job responsibilities and expectations should be the same whether the intern is paid or unpaid. BlueCrest College strongly encourages paid internships for students with distant locations from their residence to the workplace. Students can receive up to six credit hours. However, note that internship credit is not beneficial or cost effective for all students.

Criteria for unpaid internships

The following are the necessary criteria for unpaid Internship:

  • The extent to which the internship provides training that would be similar to that which would be given in an educational environment.
  • The extent to which the internship programme relates to the intern’s formal education program by integrated coursework or the receipt of academic credit.
  • The extent to which the internship accommodates the intern’s academic commitments by corresponding to the academic calendar.
  • The extent to which the internship’s duration is limited to the period in which the internship provides the intern with beneficial learning.
  • The extent to which the intern’s work complements, rather than displaces, the work of paid employees while providing significant educational benefits to the intern.
  • The extent to which the intern and the employer understand that the internship training is not entitled to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship.

FACILITATING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

The Career Office will facilitate internship avenues in organizations and institutions for students.

Based on the criteria provided by the Career Office, students who solicit internships from their preferred organizations should ensure that their training meet the standards of the Career Office.

Sophia’s Comments

The career office facilitated an internship opportunity for me at Maalo Gh. At Maalo Gh, my work was to assist the boss in pattern drafting, sewing, beading, shopping for the items needed for the sewing. Sometimes helped in ironing and packaging. It got to a time, my boss let me draft the pattern alone because of my improvement, including with the bead work. Day after days, my performance keeps on changing because of the confidence she has developed in me. Her words of encouragement and the way she treats you pushes you to do more. Miss Juliet as my boss from Maalo Gh helps me to develop an interest in other aspects of fashion, like how to promote the marketing trend of products and images on social media, she built my confidence when it comes to my workmanship. She also helped me to develop my customer relations skills.

One unique training i had at Maalo Gh was how to use commercial pattern, how to make corset , jacket, beading, simple way to draft sleeve block, choosing of colors and fabric, arranging of motives when cutting, taking records after shopping, veil , petticoat, tacks when sewing a lace dresses and many more. Excitingly, finishing a project assigned to you at Maalo Gh is one of the essential trade marks all trainees are eager to explore with great enthusiasm . Because of that, my first experience was strictly finishing work , and when it comes about discipline is a bonus. At the end of my internship, project work was given and I chose a smocking and quilting which needs more working . Infact, it got to a time I was tired and I wanted to give up because my design was complicated but miss Juliet keeps on telling me ("I know you can do it, you can do it") and her words create in me some boldness to do the design I thought it was impossible and pushes me to learn extra. Aside from the teaching, she also invited a councilor to council us. Being at Maalo Gh as an intern from BlueCrest college is a great opportunity that gives me hope day and night, there's nothing to understand about the sun concerning fashion “if i can’t do it then it doesn’t exist”.

For the bible says, with God all things are possible. (Matt 19:26)

So from the bottom of my heart I say, thank you Blue Crest
Thank you Maalo Gh
Thank you coworkers of Maalo Gh

Supervisor’s comment;

It is our pleasure to endorse Miss Sophia Afadzie as “Career Development Icon” for the 2021 graduating class of Blue Crest College school of fashion and design (SFD).
We started working with Sophia after the new year break till school resumed on the 5th of April 2021, even with that she arranged to come when she did not have lecturers. Sophia was an all round personality at Maalo-Gh. She was always ready for the task, ready to learn new things and unlearn the unacceptable way of doing things as far as the fashion business is concerned.

She also went the extra mile to stay behind even after working hours so we could complete emergency orders from clients and this was one of the things I really appreciated during her time at Maalo-Gh. She respected the job and wanted to learn more.

She constantly demonstrated extensive interest to do more for the brand. At the middle of the internship I gave all the interns a task to be presented at the end of their internship period and she executed it so well. Sophia's suggestions to design ideas were also great. As a Brand we take delight in seeing the younger generation excel. Her time, dedication, humility, selflessness and the can do spirit makes her stand tall among her peers. Every great brand needs a good team player and that she is, hence an open employment offer has been given to her should she so choose after she is done with her Diploma at School of fashion and design (SFD).

We at Maalo-Gh are confident Sophia has come this far owing to the training acquired from a people driven educational institute like BlueCrest College. We have no doubt she will continue to make a strong addition to our team if hired even after school. It’s our prayer she continues to find the energy and maturity she showed us her whole working career.

This exquisite design was the final art work of Maalo GH interns from BCC, School of Fashion. The three interns and the Managing Director of Maalo GH.
